Prince Charles Opens the Royal Hall
Release Date:
22nd January 2008
Harrogate's 'glittering palace of gold', the Royal Hall,
welcomed HRH The Prince of Wales on 22 January to reopen the venue
after a five year closure for a £10.7m restoration
project.
Prince Charles, the royal patron of the Royal Hall, enjoyed a
short concert by the best of local talent, with performances by the
Tewitt Youth Band, St Aidan's Chamber Choir and choristers William
Dutton and Emma Whiteley. The Prince then unveiled a plaque to
commemorate this auspicious event.
Lilian Mina, Chairman of the Royal Hall Restoration Trust,
introduced Prince Charles to members of the Trust and to all the
partners involved in the restoration project, before taking him on
a tour of the Hall. Prince Charles visited the Royal Hall in July
2006 and was able to see for himself the full extent of restoration
work carried out. Prince Charles said, "I likened the Royal Hall to
an elegant and lovely old lady who had fallen on somewhat hard
times."
" I see she has been taken back in time to the beauty and
splendour of her youth. The result is simply quite breathtaking."
The Hall opens to the public in April with performances by the
Halle Orchestra, Manchester Kamerata chamber orchestra and a
production of 'Beloved Clara'. Ken Dodd and Dave Spikey will appear
in May. Details of entertainments at the Royal Hall are shown in
the Box Office pages of this site.
