Green Issues

Environmental issues continue to shape our working practices here at HIC and we are now a member of the AEV (Association of Events Venues) Sustainable Working Group, working towards the event industry specific BS8901 Sustainable Event Management System.

This standard will see us encouraging organisers to introduce online registration, reduce hard copy brochures, catalogues and other paperwork and to design reusable exhibition modules and recyclable giveaways.

Around 64% of all our waste is now recycled, with plans to reduce our waste materials by 5% each year. We are also working with the Carbon Trust to reduce energy consumption and our planned new halls will meet BREAAM standards.

Locally, we have recently planted 10,000 saplings, reinvesting a percentage of our total income.

Other initiatives include investing in a mini bus to transport delegates between station, airport and hotels, thus reducing car and taxi usage. Also, there is now a 24-hour shuttle service between Leeds Bradford Airport and the centre of Harrogate.
Of course, once delegates are here, there is little need for round town transport, with hotels and after hours haunts all within a five to ten minute stroll of the HIC complex.
