Peace of Mind at HIC

Harrogate International Centre has been awarded the Park Mark accreditation by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). The police give this award to public car park operators who have achieved the standards of the Safer Parking Scheme, and it is designed to reduce crime and the fear of crime in car parks.

The car park risk assessment that the police carry out, checks that the car parking facility is properly managed, maintained and has appropriate levels of surveillance, lighting, signage and cleanliness all of which contribute to reducing the opportunity for crime.

The scheme was launched in 2004 and is managed by the British Parking Association, whose figures show there are now over 2,488 award holders in England. This initiative is much needed as vehicle crime accounts for a high percentage of all crime (up to 20%) and it is estimated that 22% of vehicle crime occurs in parking areas, the Safer Parking Scheme is designed to show drivers where they can park safely.

Speaking on behalf of the North Yorkshire Police Force, Sgt John McPartlan, said "While Harrogate is one of the lowest crime areas in England it is always good news to see that the HIC Managers are still proactively enhancing the security of their premises. This is particularly important for such a high profile venue as the HIC".

John continued, "I have been working for several years with Harrogate District parking facilities managers and the British Parking Association to make all of the District car parks safe and crime free, and testimony of the success of the Park Mark Safer Parking Award can be seen by the extremely low levels of car crime we suffer in all of our parks today".

Harrogate International Centre's red and green car parks are open to visitors to the venue on an event by event basis and have a capacity for 450 vehicles. The Park Mark sign will be displayed throughout both car parks to reassure the public of HIC's commitment to their security and safety. Further enhancements to safety and customer services are planned in the near future.
