HIC Supports Hospital in Malawi
12 July 2007
Following the introduction of a restyled staff uniform at
Harrogate International Centre (HIC) good use has been made of
their old uniform by donating 23 boxes to the Harrogate Zomba
Mental Health Link, a charity that supports the Zomba Mental
Hospital in Malawi.
The charity was established in 1999 after Jennifer Travena,
Senior Physiotherapist in mental health at Harrogate hospital,
visited the Malawian hospital. The charity fundraises for the
hospital to help buy much needed equipment and bedding. Malawi is
one of the poorest countries in the world with a life expectancy of
around 41 years, compared to around 78 years in the UK.
Jennifer was overwhelmed with the HIC donation saying, "this
is the largest donation we have received in six years". The
donation has already been shipped to Malawi along with medical
equipment.
A Team from HIC also took part in the 'It's a Knock Out'
competition organised by the charity and held at Bellwood Hall in
Ripon last month. The High Commissioner of Malawi, Dr Moto, and his
wife were guests of honour and were accompanied by the Mayor of
Harrogate, Councillor Trotter.
